Pigmentation and Cosmelan Peel treatment

We won’t sugar coat it – the biggest global issue of skin is considered to be pigmentation. It’s an all too common skin condition that affects most people in New Zealand as we have harsh environmental conditions that make us particularly susceptible to it. As we know, the sheer UV strength is an insidious issue that percolates through the country and can be the start of serious skin conditions and diseases.

In today’s blog, we will be delving into the topic of what causes pigmentation, the variety of treatments we offer to reduce pigmentation, and the best skincare products you need for an at-home routine to improve your results.

What causes pigmentation?

Our skin’s pigment is produced by the melanocyte cell. It acts as a powerhouse factory that creates the pigment called melanin, which in turn is responsible for the colours in our skin, hair and iris of the eyes. The level of melanin is dependent on your DNA as well as the quantity and quality of the sunlight that you’re exposed to. We measure the skin’s response to the sun by the Fitzpatrick scale, in which type I describes pale skin that always burns and never tans, and goes up to type VI, which is deeply pigmented dark brown skin that never burns.

When your skin is exposed to ultraviolet rays and heat, the skin recognises that there is damage being inflicted, and in turn, activates the melanocyte cells to produce melanin. This response is our skin’s way of protecting itself like an in-built sunscreen, which explains why we get tanned and freckled in summer.

When your pigmentation becomes aesthetically displeasing, this is when clients will come to us to improve the appearance of dark spots.

It’s important to note that there are two different types of pigmentation – hyper-pigmentation; which is caused by the excess production of melanin, and melasma/chloasma; commonly known as hormonal pigmentation, in which pregnancy and contraceptives can trigger age spots.

When pigmentation shows on the skin, this is a sign that it is deeper than it looks. At Lovely by skin institute, we use the Observ® 520 skin analysis technology to see hidden pigmentation and once we’ve analysed your skin thoroughly, we can then provide a customised treatment plan to target your specific concerns and during the process, you’ll find that it will tackle other issues to create a better appearance overall. Gorgeous, bright and glowing skin is easily achievable – it really is just a hop and a skip away!

What are the treatments available for pigmentation?

First and foremost, it is important to understand that you can not remove pigmentation permanently. That is similar to asking your clinician to remove wrinkles permanently! As much as we would love to turn the clock on its head like Benjamin Button, ageing is an inevitable process. However, you’ll be surprised by how much of an effect we can make via a maintenance program of treatments and an at-home skincare routine.

At Lovely by Skin Institute, we offer three different treatments that target pigmentation: Laser, Dermapen and Cosmelan

Cosmelan for Pigmentation

Cosmelan is the latest and greatest depigmentation peel that is taking the world by storm. Why, you ask? Unlike laser and microneedling, cosmelan can treat all types of pigmentation, including melasma and post-inflammatory pigmentation. Plus, it’s suitable for all skin types, so everyone can experience the mind-bending results of Cosmelan.

What is Cosmelan?

Cosmelan is a three or seven month depigmentation program which uses targeted ingredients to inhibit melanin overproduction at the melanocyte.

The Cosmelan I cream is applied in-clinic. You can expect a thick brown goopy mask and this will be left on your skin for a set amount of time depending on where your skin sits on the Fitzpatrick scale. You will then go home and stay in it for up to a total of 8-12 hours.

Your therapist will provide you with the Cosmelan II cream, which is of a serum consistency, to take home with your cleanser, moisturiser and SPF.

Depending on the progression of your depigmentation, we will ask you to come back for up to 2 follow up visits. During this time, it is beneficial to receive LED light therapy or an O Cosmedics peel.

Is Cosmelan painful?

No. There’s a slight tingle when you are wearing the Cosmelan I mask but this will fade almost immediately.

How long is the down-time with Cosmelan?

If you’re in need of a quick glow up, this is not the treatment for you. Cosmelan requires a bit of time commitment but the results are absolutely incredible and a must for brides-to-be.

Following your in-clinic Cosmelan treatment, your skin will undergo a shedding process for 7 days and the Cosmelan II cream will continue to help this.

During this time, you can expect a peaches and cream appearance with brighter, clearer and glowing skin. The improvements will continue over the following weeks and you will be left with a radiant and smooth complexion like never before.

How much does Cosmelan cost?

The Cosmelan peel package costs $1,999? This includes the peel treatment, 1 x FREE LED light therapy treatment & a 3-month Cosmelan home skincare kit. We also offer a Deluxe Package which is $2599 and includes: the peel treatment, 1 x FREE LED light therapy treatment & a 7-month Cosmelan home skincare kit.

When is the best time to start doing brightening treatments?

The ideal time to focus on depigmentation is autumn and winter – so, now is the time! When you are in a warm environment, it causes a natural heating effect in the skin and there is a risk of your treatments going sideways, resulting in post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

Whether you’re receiving microneedling, laser or Cosmelan, our expert therapists will be able to provide you with the right options and designate a tailored solution that will provide only positive results.

If your skin isn’t suitable for a treatment, we will be upfront and honest with you to ensure that there are no therapist-led errors.
